Are you or a loved one a cancer survivor? Have you been diagnosed with cancer & are wondering what to expect? Just interested in learning more about what it's like to be a survivor? Welcome to Life as a Cancer Survivor!
My name is Jelena, & my world was turned upside-down in May 2016 when at age 34, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Rectal Cancer. I was the mom of a 5-year-old daughter. I was a runner. I seemed healthy. But my body had other plans.
I created this channel to talk all things Colorectal Cancer, & sometimes just cancer in general. Follow me as I talk about my journey from diagnosis, through cancer treatments (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, having an ileostomy, and more chemotherapy) then adjusting to life post-treatment. I currently have No Evidence of Disease (what we in the cancer world like to call NED).

I'm here to take a little of the mystery out of getting a colonoscopy and help you get ready for yours!
I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colorectal Cancer at the age of 34, so in addition to this being my 4th colonoscopy I also had to do many bowel preps for procedures and tests throughout my treatment.

Colorectal Cancer - My Diagnosis and Treatment
I was just diagnosed with stage T3b N2, M0, I'm super scared. I just hope I get through it all. I start with IV chemo, then radiation and after if it is still around then surgery and I'm guessing some more chemo. It will be one heck of a hell ride. I also had Hodgkins 40 years ago, then rt. breast cancer... Story of my life it seems every 20 years. Anyway your videos are very helpful with a lot of great information and tips.
hey did you have issues where your abs felt weak or one side wouldn’t contract as strongly as the other side ?
Where did you buy the pouch?
God Bless you❤
You're not younger than me, i was diagnosed with colorectal cancer at the age 21, year 2021 and had surgery and chemotherapy, but after almost 2 year's it get back.
I’m 21 and having many of the same symptoms but doctor tells me it’s anxiety and no point for a colonoscopy 🤦♂️
Im in a lot of belly pain from air/gas😢 its every second for 11 hrs. so far now. Pff. Like contractions
I have to go for treatment is it scary
Thank you so much you are awesome!!! I have surgery the 18th this really helps!!
I had smelly gas with my cancer too
I been watching a few videos about port insert. No one is talking about clogging and flushing. I have to have one. But I'm worried it will clog. Due to the chemo sessions being x3 weeks apart. Do you have to flush the port at home ?
@willowthepony Do not wait. Tell your parent if you are a minor. Schedule the colonoscopy asap to get answers and relief. Focus on answers instead of worrying as worries do not help you get answers or treatment. 🙏🏼
I heard hair dye causes cancer😮.....also tattoo ink😮
So Glad you’re doing well
I just got shot last year when I was 19 and was in a coma for 44 days and I woke up with that thing and it freaked me out but I learned more about it and got used to it but I’m 20 now and June 13th is my appointment to see if my colon is healed for the reversal I’m so excited now I’m 20 and I’m ready
Thanks for your videos. Just had the port installed. I'm wondering how the area looks after it's removed. Do you have any scars or marks?
jalena i am now reversed and doiin well post op 3 weeks, bms are good but aweful stinky gas, i was told to try devrom.
I’m having an upper and lower tomorrow morning. Yay. 🎉
I had a ostomy reversal and I thank God and my surgeon Dr scalea for ridding me of that stinky bag. Thank you God🙏✝️
thank you so much for your video, today was my first radiation treatment ,i learned from you to ask about if my vagina is going to shrink, the nurse did say that i have to work with my obgyn after the treatment . i did finish 8 rounds of chemo which was not bad ,my body did pretty well, im kind of scared of radiation though , but i will get through this , ive been watching your video and learned a lot from you and its giving me hope .
I am from New Zealand and started my prep at 5pm this evening and it started working at 7.15. I was prescribed Glycoprep Orange which did not taste too bad other than giving me a mild headache. The 5pm prep was for 2L made from 2 sachets of Glycoprep. I have to have another 1L of prep at 5am tomorrow morning. My colonoscopy is as a result of a bowel screening test that I failed rather than from having any cancer symptoms.
Finished my last litre of Glycoprep Orange this morning. I am glad I took your advice to wear diapers last night although no accident luckly. I will wear a pair to my appointment and on the way to the post colonoscopy care home.
Hi Jelena I am back home now. It was a painless procedure and I was happy when the doctor said my prep was pretty good. She did find 3 polyps which she has sent to the lab for analysis but does not think they are cancerous. Prior to surgery the doctor did warn me of risks and I said what symptoms would I get from those problems and she said they will be able to let me know straight after the procedure if they have any problems and they did not have any. I felt I may have left with constipation last evening but I was back to normal this morning with no indication the Glycoprep Orange was still affecting me. I was given a discharge form with images on it. As its very likely I will need another one sometime due to polyps being found I will write everything down that I had for the LF diet and and steps I took to consume the Glycoprep. Maybe by next time they will have come out with a Glyco prep in the form of tablets to take. The hospital gave me complimentary transport to and accomodation in a care home last night in case I was to suffer any complications manly due to the anaesthetic.
You are such a bright and warm soul. I love your energy and enthusiam. Very strong spirit, and mind! And you have quite the story! Thanks for the share. Sending loveeee! And lighttt!
I didn't have this kind of surgery but I had like 30 staples for my knee surgery and I agree having staples is miserable. I had to sleep on my back for months because I couldn't bend my knee.
Trump 2024
Denver women are getting so fucking ugly. They were never top tier...But goddamn, It has gotten bad.
Thank you, Carole and Jelena for this EXTREMELY informative segment. I'm in Canada where this kind of transplant for non-resectable colorectal cancer liver metastases has only just recently been approved. Thank you for being a trailblazer, Carole! I'm currently doing all the workups to see if I'm a candidate for a deceased donor transplant so it was really enlightening to hear more about the process and recovery and navigating returning to life where cancer isn't the first and last thought of each and every day.
Thank you for the information. I was told that my reversal surgery is less than 5 months. God bless you.
Hey I have blood on the tissue when I poop sometimes headaches and nausea also cramps in my lower abdomen I haven’t told my mum visited a doctor or anything and the bleeding has been happening for nearly 2 years I’m scared any tips on telling my mum❤
Sounds more like hemorrhoids

How is this beautiful woman doing today? Three years later. I hope she is cured and living a full life.
How can you solve this cancer
Thanks for this video now I feel way better I’m gonna have my port place tomorrow.
Thanks for these tips. My dad is too stubborn and I have to constantly nag at him to eat healthy and prevent recurrence. Sighs
I’m having a colonoscopy a week from today and I’m scared. I have an artificial left BKA and my other foot is going bad to where I have to use a walker. It takes a while for me to put my leg on, and then get my other leg on. I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it to the bathroom and go without soiling myself. Does anyone else have that problem? So sorry for the long text!
Hope all is well still
Thank you for sharing.
I hope it is better in your country but here in New Zealand patients are given almost no advice on managing post surgery, your vid should be compulsory viewing
HEY....😂
Thank you.
You’re welcome!
I just want to know......did your poop turn green at anytime leading up to diagnoses?
Not that I noticed
Hello, I had some pecans Saturday, & my test is Thursday? Can I proceed??
You should be ok.
I am glad it all went well! I have my first colonoscopy at 48 in one week and I am nervous! Your video helped a lot. Hope all keeps well with you and your health 🙏🏻✨
I have one on Thursday after failing a bowel screening test. Prior to watching her video I sort of wondered if I would need adult diapers and she has confirmed I would plus not to expect to get much sleep the night before. I may even get a tarpaulin to replace the sheets on my bed.
I forgot to tell you, i have a 12 cm mass on my left ovary and have to have cancer surgery in future.
so in an average week you have about 1-3 bowel movements daily, while 2 being the average it seems. thats amazing. when I had UC I would have to go maybe up to 20 times a day sometimes and this makes me hopeful for my reversal. I hope I get this result, I dont want to get my hopes too high though, I have heard about 6-8 times a day too. and how do you deal with accidents? do they occasionaly happen ?
I put off colonoscopy at 45 and 46, but now at age 47, something is not right as of last month. I am pooping painful concrete with blood in it. I actually have had everything seem to turn into gas this last year too. Not stinky, but what on Earth? I get random nausea after eating sometimes-really weird.
